Similarities between trying for google summer of code and hitting on a girl

I think these two are quite similar. > The girl you are hitting on is like your gsoc mentor. > And the relationship that you are proposing to her is like your project. Now you all will agree with the following points: You have to work very hard trying to convince the mentor, that you are the right person for this job and will successfully complete the project. There are different types of mentors. Some are impressed when you immediately start contributing to the project ;), whereas others want a detailed timeline from you of how you would be doing the project. Nobody has ever been able to understand the ideology of mentors. You think they are supporting you in the start, but they are doing the same for every other candidate. Sometimes, there are other fellow-mentors also (girl's friends). In that case, you have to impress them also with your work. There may be other candidates that are trying to achieve the same project. They often try to convince the mentor that they...

Unfolding the Madhushala - I

I had written about madhushala some time back here . Ever since then, it has been on my playlist continuously and every time I listen to it, I seem to unfold more of what the poet wants to say. So, I have decided to write an explanation of each paragraph in this sequence of posts. But before that, let me tell you what I have understood till this point: So basically the poet is trying to narrate the life of an alcoholic. At first, when he hasn't started drinking, he is a novice and trying to find some place to just wet his lips. The poet directs him to madhushala and presents him with the beauty of this place. He says that the people here are always cheerful and each day is like a festival. He says that only that person is welcomed here who doesn't believe in religion, who feels the joy of pain and has left all the traditions. He wants the whole world to be like madhushala, even the temples where he says that he'll act as a god's idol and the people should chant t...

Types of people on a dinner table

I have been planning to write this for a long time. So basically you all would have observed that whenever you go out in a group for a dinner, there are always some specific kind of people and it's fun to observe the activities of these eclectic characters. I will try to list a few based on my experience. 1) Who is in charge of maintaining the law and order Let's start with this one person in each group who has considered this his topmost priority right from his birth. From placing the order to collecting the money from everyone, he has to make sure that the law and order is maintained throughout the process. He faces this obligation whenever the group goes out. This person often complaints that he has to do it everytime and publicly warns others that he is not going to do it in future. But everybody knows what's going to happen the next time they go out. 2) Who talks with only the adjacent person This is the person who very rarely participates in the convers...

Word games for your brain

I was searching for a clue for some english crossword and came across this site, which offers various word games. You can find the list of games here: http://www.wordplays.com/help/word-games/ Most of the word games are very interesting. My favourite one is word morph (Mention in the comments if you are able to beat 920 ;) ) Apart from the entertainment part, these type of exercises if played on reguar basis, can improve the cognitive functions of our mind (mainly memory, attention and executive function) significantly, and also, provide a nice way to enhance the vocabulary. There is also an android app for similar type of games, named "Text twist". Give them a try, you'll defnitely like it.
